Heat pumps are electrical devices that extract heat from one place – underground, air or water – and transfer that heat elsewhere by circulating a refrigerant which is then compressed to release the heat absorbed. The heat extracted is generally used to warm water for space and under floor heating. The same technology is more familiar to most of us in its use in refrigeration and air conditioning.
